The reindeer that now live in Iceland were imported from Finnmark in Norway in 1787 and live exclusively in the East Fjords and the surrounding highlands. Reindeer, like the fox, thrive best in northern regions and cold climates. They are beautiful and graceful and can often be seen in large groups on Fagradalur between Egilsstadir and Reydarfjordur in Iceland and now even close to human settlements in the East Fjords. Every year over 1000 animals are hunted and the meat is valuable and much sought after. The fur is also used in various types of clothing, especially for tourists. Perhaps the reindeer is best known for pulling Santa’s sleigh, where it is ranked first in the category of one of the most well-known animals in history, Rudolf.
