By laying their eggs near the Tern’s other birds get shelter and security. When unknown intruders approach, and the Tern views them as a threat it will attack without hesitation. It dives at immense speed to scare off people or other animals. I remember from my trips around the country, my sons playing around arctic terns’ laying grounds, daring each other to run further, yelling and swinging wooden sticks over their heads so the birds “wouldn’t poke a hole in their heads”, – as they called it. This amazing and lightweight migrant, has the furthest round trip of all migrants, or about 44,000 miles every year, and as a reward, experiences two summers every year. In the picture’s background you can see the French hospital at Hafnarnes in Fáskrúðsfjörður.
